The Red Car Trolleys of Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure

Guests enter the newly expanded Disney California Adventure Park through a completely redesigned entrance that brings the spirit of Walt Disney into the park like never before. Immersed in a locale reminiscent of Los Angeles in the 1920s, when Disney first arrived in California, guests encounter the Red Car Trolley, one of four new attractions opening June 15 at Disney California Adventure.

  • The Red Car Trolleys are inspired by Los Angeles’ historic Pacific Electric Red Cars from the 1920s and ’30s.
  • Two Red Car Trolley cars operate daily, traveling from Buena Vista Street through Hollywood Land and on to the Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror. The trolleys traverse back and forth, making several stops along the way
  • The Red Car Trolley route passes the new icon of Disney California Adventure, the Carthay Circle Theatre, inspired by the site where Walt Disney premiered “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937.
  • Two conductors operate each Red Car Trolley, engaging riders with fun details about Disney California Adventure, including architectural, design and historical facts about the Red Car Trolleys and Carthay Circle Theatre.
  • The trolley interiors showcase the soft green and cream colors of the time period. Guests also find vintage-looking ads highlighting food locations and shops in the park.
  • Each Red Car Trolley has a bell and a whistle, adding to the melodic sounds of the street.
  • The “Red Car Trolley News Boys” roll into town on one of the Red Car Trolleys singing “California Here I Come!” and other fun songs inspired by the spirit and style of Disney’s Broadway show, “Newsies.” Even Mickey Mouse joins the show.
  • From the Red Car Trolley, guests can wave to “citizens” of Buena Vista Street, resplendent in their period attire and filled with the optimism of the era.
  • The Red Car Trolleys are 26 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11 feet tall. They seat 20 passengers with an additional space for a wheelchair.
  • Each Red Car Trolley has a number. The 623 car, with “23″ as a nod to the year 1923 when Walt Disney arrived in California, is based on the 600 series of trolleys built by the St. Louis Car Company in 1922. The 717 car is inspired by the 700-750 series manufactured by the J.G. Brill Company in 1925 (7-17 also refers to the birthday of Disneyland Park, July 17, 1955).
  • Catenary lines – the classic above-vehicle electric cabling - have been added above the trolleys to enhance authenticity. The trolleys are actually powered by onboard 12-volt batteries and they are fully recharged in the Red Car barn each night.
  • The Red Car Trolleys were engineered from the ground up to meet today’s industry standards, operating efficiently with steel wheels on steel rails.
  • When necessary, the trolleys recharge at one of the stops using inductive power transfer. This technology is used on Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage and also used to recharge consumer products such as cell phones.

Columbus Crew Claim 2014 Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic Title

The Columbus Crew’s high-powered offense proved too much for Sporting KC, the defending MLS Cup champions. The Crew jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period, and never relinquished their advantage after halftime, putting up three more goals before Sporting KC scored its first and only goal of the night to avoid being shutout.

The Crew arrived at the championship match after defeating Toronto FC and Philadelphia Union during the first two days of pool play, before tying with Orlando City SC 4-4 on the final day of pool play.

In 2013, the Crew faced the Montreal Impact in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic title game, but came up short in a 1-0 loss.

The day featured a full lineup of action, beginning with a matchup between the Fluminense FC U23 team and Toronto FC. Fluminense FC scored 4 goals after being blanked throughout the previous three days of competition to beat Toronto FC with a final score of 4-2.

Philadelphia Union and the 2013 Disney Pro Soccer classic champions, Montreal Impact played next in a highly-contested match, ending the 90 minutes of regulation with a 1-1 tie before going into penalty kicks. Philadelphia Union edged out Montreal Impact 4-1 in kicks to win the match 2-1 (4-1 PK).

The third match featured hometown favorite Orlando City SC squaring off against the New York Red Bulls, the 2014 MLS regular season champions. The match featured thrilling offense in the second period, with six total goals scored during the 45 minutes, eventually resulting in a 4-4 tie. Orlando City SC will return to the ESPN Wide World of Sports on March 29 to open its 2014 home season schedule.

Fun facts! Topiary, Landscape and New Food & Beverage Trivia for 21st Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

Thirty million multi-hued blooms, 100-plus whimsical topiaries, 1,000 native butterflies and dozens of new food and beverage marketplace tastes bring multi-sensory fun to the 21st Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival March 5-May 18 at Walt Disney World Resort.

Among this year’s fun festival facts:

  • 30 million blooms blanket the park throughout the festival, which runs 75 colorful days.
  • 11 Outdoor Kitchens featuring sweet and savory food and beverage menu items, and more than one dozen brand-new menu items add tasting fun and variety to the festival. Each marketplace will feature a produce and herb garden to represent more than 50 overall beverage choices and more than 40 food items featured.
  • The festival’s front-entrance Spring is In the Air topiary scene comprises three character topiaries – Donald, Daisy and Goofy on a butterfly spotting excursion – and more than 15 varieties of flowers, plants, and other garden materials. Guests will find 99 topiaries throughout the park — 79 of them are character topiaries.
  • Mike & Sulley’s Monstrous Garden, a themed playground for children with innovative play systems, is one of the largest festival gardens created at nearly one-third acre. A collection of large, leafy plants including elephant ears, rubber plants, sea grapes, fiddle leaf fig, banana plants and colorful bromeliads and hibiscus create the garden’s “monstrous” ambiance. The garden’s Sulley topiary is one of Disney’s largest, weighing in at 4,300 pounds. About 4,000 small plants fill his 13-foot frame.
  • Two new topiary stars this year are Kermit and Miss Piggy! Dozens of additional character topiaries represent the largest collection of Disney character topiary in the world and include Timon and Pumbaa, Cinderella, Belle and Beast, and Phineas and Ferb.
  • At least 25 different plants, grasses and mosses of various colors, including pink and red begonias, dusty miller, palm fiber, palm seeds, ficus and lichen, are used to create and define facial and other features of festival character topiaries.
  • 1,000 native butterflies represent up to 10 species at the expansive Tinker Bell’s Butterfly House. Among the garden’s two dozen nectar plants are Cape Royal plumbago, passion flower, coral honeysuckle, blazing star, butterfly bush, scarlet milkweed and canna lily.
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbirds will have a new place to visit during their migration this spring at the Hummingbirds at Home garden exhibit presented by Audubon. These magical creatures fly non-stop for 20 hours over the Gulf of Mexico as they hum their way to Florida from Central America. Hummingbirds are the only birds able to hover and fly backward and upside down!
  • 240 extra playground hours add extra festival magic for children and their families with the illuminated garden playgrounds staying open through park closing.
  • More than 500,000 plants, trees and shrubs are planted for the festival; 250,000 of those are annual blossoms installed for the festival.
  • Festival plants include 60 different species of trees, 47 types of palms, and 48 varieties of bedding plants.
  • 150 hands-on gardening demonstrations and seminars will be presented.
  • Thirty “flower towers” of several varieties of blooms and plants line Innoventions Plaza.
  • 225 floating mini-gardens, each three feet in diameter, of multi-hued impatiens provide splashes of color on two ponds that border the walkway between Future World and World Showcase.
  • 700 container gardens of flowers, herbs, plants and vegetables in clay pots, barrels and urns enhance the landscape throughout Epcot.
  • 400 Walt Disney World horticulturists are needed to install the festival landscape, topiaries and many exhibits; 100 Epcot horticulturists maintain topiaries and other festival displays.
  • It takes more than one full year and about 24,000 cast member hours to prepare for the annual festival.
  • The festival’s weekend Flower Power concert series includes 11 artists and groups known for their Top 40 hits.  This year’s musical hit-makers from the 1960s and ’70s include new-to-Flower Power acts Gary Lewis & the Playboys and the Alan Parsons Live Project. Returning are opening weekend act The Guess Who, plus Village People, Chubby Checker & The Wildcats, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Grass Roots, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Orchestra starring former members of ELO, Starship starring Mickey Thomas and Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone.

“Muppets Most Wanted” Soundtrack To Make Mayhem March 18

muppets most wantedThe Muppets are back on the big screen with the all-new caper “Muppets Most Wanted,” creating the musical mayhem that’s made them fan favorites for almost four decades. With songs by Bret McKenzie, who won an Oscar® for the original song “Man or Muppet” in 2011’s “The Muppets,” and a score by Christophe Beck, who’s behind the scores of Disney’s Oscar-winning short “Paperman” and the Golden Globe®-winning, Oscar-nominated hit “Frozen,” the soundtrack features all-star vocalists, including Kermit the Frog, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey, Miss Piggy, Josh Groban, Constantine and Celine Dion. Walt Disney Records will release the “Muppets Most Wanted” soundtrack March 18, three days before the movie hits theaters.

“The ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ soundtrack is some of the best music by a frog, pig, bear, chickens, penguins and a—uh, whatever—ever recorded,” said Kermit the Frog. “It’s like going on tour with the Muppets, but without the messy cleanup afterwards.

According to McKenzie, who wrote songs for the Muppets’ last big-screen adventure, the songs are true to the Muppets’ musical reputation: they’re packed with puns, punch lines and Muppets mayhem. “All of the songs are quite story specific,” he said. “They’re very character driven.

“‘I’m Number One’ is about the bad frog Constantine being the number one criminal and his sidekick Dominic, played by Ricky Gervais, being number two,” McKenzie continued. “It’s a power struggle, a classic rivalry song in a style that could be performed in a cabaret venue. A lot of the old Muppets songs are like that—show pieces.”
