A Quest for Nostalgia by Rames Ali

Despite being one of the most successful companies in history, the Walt Disney Company doesn’t attempt to hide its biggest key to success. Throughout the years, one of the main practices that has kept Disney, and especially the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts, far ahead of the competition has been the unique combination of immersion and nostalgia.

As a Cast Member at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I experience this combination on a daily basis, and can vouch for its importance with so many of our guests. But what a lot of guests may not know is that there’s a special way to experience those things – For half the price!

In that exceptionally cheesy intro, I’m referring to Disney Quest. I’m not going to argue that guests are not aware of the existence of this 5-story, 100,000 square foot attraction in Downtown Disney. In this day and age, I would be very surprised if anything related to Disney could possibly remain hidden longer than it takes someone to take a Snapchat. However, what a lot of our guests may not realize in the stress of planning a trip that includes four separate parks is the experience that Disney Quest can provide.

With multiple full arcades, creation zones and virtual reality experiences, Disney Quest offers a look at the potential future of theme park attractions – mixing classic games and crowd-favorites with unique experiences such as new looks at classic park attractions including Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Jungle Cruise.

Though some of the technology used may feel admittedly dated, Disney Quest is light-years ahead of its time in its concept – allowing guests to interact with the attractions and characters that they can only experience while at the parks. Guests can create their own song or roller coaster, build their own virtual toys, experience Disney animation first-hand, and even just play arcade games to their hearts desire. At Disney Quest, the guest controls what they experience.

The hands-on nature of Disney Quest is what separates it from both the Disney World parks and other popular entertainment businesses like Dave and Busters. It captures the best of both worlds and adds just enough of that classic Pixie Dust to make it feel like a futuristic extension of the parks and movies that we’ve grown to know and love.

I knew Disney Quest was something special when I saw the different ways that families were enjoying their time there. Fathers were building roller coasters and playing arcade games, mothers were playing Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, families were making music and buying their own CDs. The beauty of those experiences is what Disney has always done best – allowing people of all ages to become kids once again and capturing the nostalgia and memories of the classic childhood.

In short – Disney Quest may well be the most underrated attraction available at the Walt Disney World resort. With a 45 dollar ticket, it’s an experience that can be had at half the price of a day at one of the parks, and provides a more hand-on approach to the routine experience of a park . It’s a great way to take a break from the insanity of park crowds, with minimal crowds during the middle of the day, without sacrificing the priceless memories.

One of the main goals for my column is to use the advantages that I’ve been given as a Cast Member to help other guests explore Walt Disney World in ways that they may not think of in the stress of planning their short stays. What I hadn’t realized was that there are still so many places, such as Disney Quest, that I hadn’t fully explored. This never-ending stream of potential new memories is what makes the Walt Disney World resort such a valuable experience time after time.

Thanks for reading folks, and don’t forget to keep exploring, because “curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”. Until next time!

Disneyland Resort Celebrates Three Kings Day with New Performances – ‘The Spirit of Navidad’

Wrapping up the Holiday season with five, festive days, the Disneyland Resort will celebrate Three Kings Day at Disney California Adventure Park, Friday through Tuesday, Jan. 2-6, 2015. The Three Kings Day celebration provides guests with a new opportunity to delight in the cultural experience that is “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!,” a fun and popular event that has run throughout the holiday season with a colorful street party, authentic and merry music, and traditional Mexican foods.

New at the park this year for Three Kings Day is “The Spirit of Navidad,” a joyful storytelling performance presented by two bilingual, musical artists. This festive addition will deepen guests’ appreciation of the various Latino traditions celebrated during Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Día de Los Reyes (Three Kings Day). The storytellers will perform interactive musical interludes throughout this spirited celebration. Guests may take photos with sculptures of the Three Kings bearing gifts and enjoy a traditional sweet treat known as Rosca de Reyes. Children may participate in crafts and make paper crowns with sparkling “jewels.”

Three Kings Day has been celebrated for generations in Mexico, Spain, Latin America and other countries as part of the Christmas story. It commemorates the day the three kings (the magi or “wise men”) followed the star to Bethlehem bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  • The Three Kings Day celebration at Disney California Adventure unfolds in Paradise Gardens, near the site of “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!,” an event inspired by the warmth and joyous holiday spirit of the Latino culture. The area is decorated with holly, banners and authentic cultural icons, including traditional papel picado hand-cut art decorations.
  • Along with the new storytelling performances, sculptures of the Three Kings will be displayed in Paradise Gardens. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy also will appear in their “fiesta” costumes, along with The Three Caballeros: Donald Duck, Panchito from Mexico, and José Carioca from Brazil.
  • Jan. 2-6 are the final days to enjoy the exciting “Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party.” Performing six times daily, it features The Three Caballeros on a colorful holiday float, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse transported on brightly decorated street tricycles, flag-bearers carrying papel picado banners, Mexican folklorico dancers, Brazilian samba dancers and drummers, plus giant mojiganga puppets depicting Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
  • At the Paradise Gardens Bandstand, guests will enjoy performances by traditional Mariachi, Norteño, and other regional music groups. Also at Paradise Gardens, community music and folklórico troupes perform throughout the weekend.
  • Three Kings Day guests also may participate in the ongoing “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” arts and crafts, storytelling and face painting, and they will discover a selection of unique merchandise.
  • Dining locations in Paradise Gardens continue to offer popular Mexican food options in honor of the holidays. Menus feature Mexican dishes such as pozole (hearty stew), chicken mole drumettes, champurrado (Mexican-style hot chocolate), sweet tamales, torta al pastor (pork sandwich) and buñuelos (deep-fried sweet treat). Traditional Rosca de Reyes bread is offered for Three Kings Day.
  • The Three Kings Day festivities add to all the holiday fun at the Disneyland Resort, including nightly snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A., “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, “it’s a small world” Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday attractions in Disneyland Park, plus bell-ringing carolers, special Cars Land décor and the dazzling “World of Color – Winter Dreams” holiday water spectacular in Disney California Adventure Park.

My First Disney Christmas by Diane Butler

Although I have visited Walt Disney World more than 20 times, I have never had the opportunity to make it to the parks during the holiday season. Earlier this month, I was blessed to to make my first holiday time trip to Walt Disney World with my mom and my 10 year old daughter. It was definitely worth the wait! I was able to squeeze an amazing amount of holiday fun into our 4 day trip.

I was most looking forward to seeing the extravagant holiday decorations in both the parks and the resorts, and I was definitely not disappointed! Magic Kingdom Park glistened with beautiful lights, including Queen Elsa’s dazzling icy display on Cinderella Castle. Main Street, U.S.A was so gorgeous with the garland and wreaths strung about. Epcot had its own holiday flair. I especially loved checking out the various themed decorations around the World Showcase. Although the parks’ décor was spectacular, the resort decorations were not to be outdone! I was able to check out several of the resort displays. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa’s Christmas tree was breathtaking, and the life-size gingerbread house was right out of a storybook. Disney’s Contemporary Resort did not disappoint with its Frozen inspired gingerbread display (and the treats were awesome, too!). Disney’s Beach Club Resort held a working gingerbread carousel that was awe-inspiring, and the train display at Disney’s Yacht Club had so many tiny details to take in. No corner of Walt Disney World was missed in the holiday splendor. I am so thrilled that I finally had the opportunity to take it all in.

Walt Disney World offers so many special holiday activities that is was nearly impossible to see them all in 4 days. I was able to attend Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which was as fun as I was expecting. The Once Upon A Christmastime Parade was so festive- I especially loved the toy soldiers! Holiday Wishes was fantastic to see as well. The parades and fireworks were pretty crowded, but the ride lines were lower than an average day. In Epcot, I was able to see The Candlelight Processional for the first time, and was blown away. It was such an awe-inspiring celebration of the story of Christmas- definitely not to be missed. In Hollywood Studios, we were able to take a walk through of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. This is truly a sight to see! It was amazing to watch those millions of lights dance to the music.

All in all, it was too short of a trip to see all of the amazing offerings that Walt Disney World has to offer. I hope to make it back next year to spend more time exploring the storytellers int eh World Showcase and checking out the decorations in the resorts that I missed. I feel so blessed to have finally experienced my beloved Walt Disney World at the holidays! Sharing this visit with my family was the perfect way to start off my holiday season.

Happy holidays to all, and best wishes for a magical 2015!
