Disney Interactive is giving Disney Infinity (1.0 Edition) Wii gamers the chance to upgrade their play experience to Wii U free of charge, exclusively through the Nintendo eShop. Starting today, fans who own the Disney Infinity Starter Pack on Wii can download the Wii U version of the game from the Nintendo eShop, complete with multiplayer. The Disney Infinity base and figures are required to play on Wii U once downloaded.

The Wii U version of Disney Infinity utilizes the Wii U GamePad to create worlds in the Toy Box and share them online. Activate missions and unlock toys in Play Sets to discover Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles in high definition. Play as Sulley in his early student days in the world of Monsters University, plunge into adventure as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean, and activate the powers of Mr. Incredible on a quest to save the world from Syndrome and his super villains in The Incredibles Play Set.

“Disney Infinity launched one year ago, and in that time the number of Wii U players has significantly expanded,” said John Blackburn, Vice President and General Manager of Avalanche Software. “Given our commitment to compatibility for our players, we wanted existing Wii owners to be able to experience the Wii U version of the first game for free. With the upcoming launch of the 2.0 Edition of Disney Infinity we want all Nintendo players to experience the game’s Wii U functionality.”

When Disney Infinity was first announced, people assumed that it was Skylanders with Disney characters. As we learned more, it became clear that one of the differentiating factors was Infinity’s Toy Box mode, a playground for building adventures and minigames, or just crafting a brand new sandbox in which to play.

In the adventures that Disney Infinity builds, the female characters find themselves relentlessly outgunned. Though the Infinity franchise features a healthy balance of male and female characters, there’s an odd double standard–boys can always play in girls’ adventures, but it’s increasingly rare for girls to be able to play in boys’.

I am Groot! Announcing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set for Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition)! Marvel’s next summer blockbuster film is coming to Disney Infinity. Today, Disney Interactive officially announced the latest Play Set for Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) – Guardians of the Galaxy, inspired by the upcoming film Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in theaters August 1.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set follows Star-Lord and his fellow Guardians as they arrive at Knowhere, having just stolen a powerful cosmic object from the villainous Ronan the Accuser. Players will guide the team as they race to protect Knowhere from Ronan and his attacking Sakaaran fleet while keeping their newly liberated item safe from the villain’s evil grasp.

In addition to the trailer, the new asset pack includes character images and action screenshots showing the characters in the Play Set and Toy Box 2.0.

Playable characters for the Play Set include Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamora and Groot, as well as crossover characters Iron Man (from The Avengers Play Set) and Nova (from The Spider-Man Play Set). Mission givers will include Cosmo, The Collector and Yondu.

Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamora and Groot will be also playable in the all-new Toy Box 2.0, along with all characters previously released for Disney Infinity. Players will be able to use these characters, plus hundreds of Marvel and Disney-themed items, locations, props and vehicles to create new adventures in customized worlds. Additionally, the Guardians of the Galaxy characters will partake in one of the new structured Toy Box Games now offered in Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes. The Toy Box Game, called Attack on Asgard has Loki opening a series of portals that allow an army of Frost Giants to invade Odin’s Palace at Loki’s command. The Giants threaten to lay waste to Asgard, rob Odin’s Palace and ultimately grant control of the throne to Loki.

In addition, there will be Guardians of the Galaxy themed Power Discs that will enable players to customize their Play Set and Toy Box experiences. The Power Discs include:

• Space Armor – Unlock Gamora’s out of this world Space Armor costume for added protection against enemies. Who says fashion can’t be functional too?
• Marvel Team-Up: Yondu – Fight alongside this powerful, arrow shooting ally and send enemies running for their lives
• Groot’s Roots – Theme out your Toy Box world with Groot’s Roots. It’s sure to grow on you!
• Groot’s View – Embrace your inner green thumb and theme Toy Box skies out Groot-style
• Star-Lord’s Galaxy – Turn your Toy Box into Knowhere – Star-Lord’s home base in the Galaxy
• The Rip – Turn Toy Box skies into the skies of Knowhere with this Power Disc and transport yourself to the outer edge of all space and time

The Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set will be available in retail stores this fall. Additional characters will be announced in the coming months. Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes is being developed by Avalanche Software and is rated E-10+ by the ESRB.

Bring on the adventure with these two iconic Disney characters and create your own magical place in the Toy Box. Each character is sold separately and has unique abilities only playable in the 2.0 edition of Disney Infinity.

Disney Interactive announced that the first-ever Disney Infinity Toy Box Summit will be held August 15-17 at Avalanche Software in Salt Lake City, Utah. This fan appreciation event will pit top Toy Box creative artists from around the world to partake in a super-powered Toy Box competition. The best creations will then be leveraged during the game’s fall launch. In addition, the summit will also feature:

· Five of the recently Avalanche-hired Associate Community Level Designers including “CRAZYBYNICK” to act as mentors. They will be offering tips to the newly picked artists on how to create the best Toy Boxes.

· Panels and roundtable feedback sessions with the developers

· Exclusive hands-on preview of Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes

· Tour of the studio

· Keynote addresses from Disney Infinity executives

· Live streaming webcast for public to attend in real time

Since the game’s August 2013 launch, Disney Infinity’s community of players has created thousands of Toy Boxes, driving more than 12 million Toy Box downloads. Each week, users are tasked to create a themed Toy Box. The “Disney Infinity Toy Box TV: The Official Weekly Web Show” then compiles the top 5 Toy Boxes for players to download. These competitions have helped Disney identify the top Toy Box artists who are being invited to participate in this year’s event.

In addition to Disney Interactive hand picking artists to participate, three aspiring attendees will have the chance to join through Disney Infinity’s first ever video contest. Fans will be tasked to create a video that celebrates their favorite Disney movie using the Disney Infinity Toy Box. Disney will provide a Contest Fan Kit including approved music, graphics, and game capture tutorials to help increase the quality of video content created. Winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the summit and 10 additional runners up will receive a Captain America Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes Figure. Video entries will be submitted via the Disney Infinity website and moderated by Guest Experience.
