Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen Offers Guests Exotic Flavors, Healthful Options at Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World Resort guests with an appetite for adventure can satisfy their taste buds and enjoy the quick wit and humor of the World Famous Jungle Cruise skippers at the newly opened Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen.

Located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park, Jungle Skipper Canteen features a menu full of Asian, South American and African cuisine inspired by the flavors of the rivers found on the nearby Jungle Cruise attraction.

This new 222-seat table-service restaurant is staffed by the wise-cracking crew of the Jungle Cruise and is open for lunch and dinner. The theme is based on the story of Jungle Navigation Company Ltd. owner Alberta Falls (granddaughter of the company’s founder Dr. Albert Falls – who fans will recognize from the quips about the waterfall on their Jungle Cruise journey), who opened the doors to their home base of operations to hungry explorers.

Guests dine amidst three curiously quirky themed dining rooms: The Mess Hall, a large multipurpose space used by the skippers for decades; The Jungle Room, a parlor featuring treasures from the Falls family’s personal collection; and The S.E.A. Room, a secret space once hidden by a false bookshelf that served as the meeting place of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.).

Flavorful Tastes from Around the Globe
Diners can explore the bold cuisines of Asia, South America and Africa with healthful dishes that have unique twists on classic savory specialties.

Entrees include a rice noodle bowl of pho broth served with choice of chicken, duck breast or tofu and served with jalapenos and mix of fresh herbs; Trader Sam’s Head-on Shrimp with sustainable, local farm-raised shrimp tossed in a chili-garlic sauce and served with Chinese broccoli and five-grain or white rice; and house-made arepas with slow-cooked beef, black beans, tostones and queso fresco.

There’s also Dr. Falls’ Signature Grilled Steak, with strip loin marinated in sofrito and served with house-made chimichurri, avocado and yuca planks.

A sweet sendoff is in store for those who opt for dessert. There’s a choice of the Coconut Bar with Pineapple-Basil Compote and Vanilla Cream – a vanilla chiffon cake with coconut and lime-white chocolate ganache; or Kungaloosh! – an African-inspired chocolate cake with caramelized bananas served with cashew-caramel ice cream topped with coffee dust.

Yummy Bites for Little Ones
Adventure awaits for kiddos, too. Menu items include delectable dishes such as Junior Skip’s Special Mac and Cheese, which is inspired by an Egyptian dish with ground beef, pasta, Bechamel Sauce and house-made cheese gratin, served with broccoli; and Amazon Annie’s House-made Arepas with beef, black beans and queso fresco served with yuca planks.

For dessert, there’s a special kids volcano with gooey chocolate cake overflowing with caramel lava and exploding chocolate rocks.

Specialty Beverages
Guests can choose from two non-alcoholic specialties, the Punch Line Punch with tropical fruit juice and mango puree (also available with a savory spiced-rim); and the Schweitzer Slush, with frozen apple juice and passion fruit topped with bursting green apple boba balls.

Both of the special ‘mocktails’ also can be ordered in a souvenir mug.

Jungle Skipper Canteen accepts the Disney Dining Plan. For reservations, guests may call 407-WDW-Dine, visit www.DisneyWorld.com/dine or use the MyDisneyExperience mobile app.

Plenty of Delicious Dining Options Offer Something for Every Guest at the Disneyland Resort

From fast-casual fare to haute cuisine, the menu of dining options at the Disneyland Resort offers something for every guest. Here, waffles with the Disney characters are as celebrated as the spectacular creations at Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge.

“We offer innovative cuisine from our award-winning chefs that match our guests’ desire for elegant dining,” said Gary Maggetti, director of food and beverage and merchandise integration at the Disneyland Resort. “But you can still find the Disneyland classics, from the Café Orléans Monte Cristo to Plaza Inn’s fried chicken.”

The rise in fine dining at the Disneyland Resort is often an unexpected delight. At the hotels, top award winners are Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel. A stellar wine program has elevated the quality of dining service throughout the Resort, with trained sommeliers in restaurants including Napa Rose, Steakhouse 55 and Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge at Disney California Adventure Park.

Healthful Initiatives
Even though vacation may be a time for indulgence, Disneyland chefs provide healthful options. For lifestyle dining options, or for requests from guests with food allergies or intolerances, there are a wide range of choices, from kosher to gluten-friendly and sugar-free.

For families, the Mickey Check makes it easy to identify healthier food options in the all of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, part of an ongoing program that launched in 2006 with nutrition guidelines. Choices that receive the Mickey Check must meet Disney Nutrition Guidelines that limit calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugar. For example, Blue Bayou Restaurant in Disneyland Park now offers seared salmon, spaghetti, broccolini and fresh fruit for kids. (Kids’ Complete Meals must be ordered without substitutions and include at least three of the following food groups: fruits and vegetables; low-fat dairy; whole grains; or lean protein, beans, eggs and nuts.)

The Mickey Check also appears on some Disney-licensed food products sold at retail locations, on qualifying recipes at Disney.com and Family.com, and on menus at quick-service restaurants at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts.

Theme Park Eats
At Disney California Adventure, Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge is designed to be one of the premier dining locations at the Disneyland Resort. The cuisine is the star, with artisan ingredients, locally sourced produce, seafood and meats from throughout Southern California.

Also found on Buena Vista Street are three spots for quick bites: Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe serving Disney baked goods and Starbucks La Boulange™ pastry items along with Starbucks coffee and espresso beverages; Mortimer’s Market with whole and cut fruits, bottled water, juices and soft drinks; and Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream.

Cars Land has three spots for guest to fuel up:  Flo’s V8 Cafe with an on-stage rotisserie and house-made pies; Cozy Cone Motel with tasty cone-theme treats from churro bites to chili “cone” queso; and Fillmore’s Taste-In with whole and cut fruits, bottled water, juices and soft drinks.

Also at Disney California Adventure, guests can grab a sandwich or sweets at Pacific Wharf CaféCocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill offers tacos with steak, pork, or grilled chicken. Hearty Asian creations are served at Lucky Fortune Cookery, with beef, chicken or tofu with vegetables, rice and your choice of four sauces.

The dining pavilion in Paradise Pier provides plenty of seating and two restaurants. Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta offers something for everyone, from hearty pasta dishes to delicious salads and pizzas with flavors from traditional cheese to vegetarian with roasted seasonal vegetables.  Next door, Paradise Garden Grill offers a Mediterranean spin with chicken, beef, vegetable and tofu skewers served with a choice of sauce, including Moroccan chili tomato and tandoori-spiced yogurt. Refreshing Greek salads and a kid’s menu also are available.

Corn Dog Castle serves a popular beach snack in two flavors, original and hot-link. Bayside Brews offers domestic and specialty beers on tap for guests 21 years of age and older, along with a selection of non-alcoholic beverages and warm, salted pretzels.

To while away a lunch, dine al fresco at Wine Country Trattoria at the Golden Vine Winery, with a menu of pastas, grilled sandwiches and California wines by the glass. At dinner, the menu adds braised beef ravioli, herb-roasted chicken alfredo and braised lamb shank. The Alfresco Tasting Terrace, on the second floor of the Golden Vine Winery, offers small plates of classic Mediterranean favorites complemented by wines from the “Disney Family of Wines,” a collection whose vintners have a personal connection to the Disney name.

The lively Ariel’s Disney Princess Celebration at Ariel’s Grotto is one of this park’s most-requested reservations for breakfast and lunch with Ariel, Snow White, Belle, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty greeting guests at every table. (Dinner does not include Disney characters.)

In Disneyland Park, favorite quick bites include Disney baked goods and Starbucks La Boulange™ pastry items along with Starbucks coffee and espresso beverages from Market House on Main Street, U.S.A.; lobster bisque or clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl and shrimp salad from the Harbour Galley in New Orleans Square; sandwiches and sweets from the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe on Main Street, U.S.A.; easy-to-eat skewer snacks at The Bengal Barbecue and the legendary Dole Whip at the Tiki Juice Bar in Adventureland; Mickey-shaped beignets from the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square; hot pizza from Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port and a variety of Star Wars-inspired menu items from Galactic Grill in the Tomorrowland Terrace location, both in Tomorrowland.

For a relaxing meal, spots such as Carnation Café on Main Street, U.S.A., serve generous salads and the legendary loaded baked potato soup, along with Walt’s favorite meatloaf and fried chicken.  Guests will find lunchtime favorites like fish and chips, chili in a sourdough bread bowl and ice cream sundaes, in an entertaining indoor setting at the The Golden Horseshoe in Frontierland. Nearby, House of Blues has diners digging in to St. Louis ribs and pan-seared jumbo shrimp and grits. The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort Offer More Magic and Memories

At the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, leisure and business travelers will find three Disney Hotel properties, each with a distinctive style: the luxurious surroundings and California Craftsman architecture of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the classic Disney magic and charm of the Disneyland Hotel, and the sunny California beachfront theme at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.

Offering a variety of accommodations, surroundings and amenities, all three hotels feature the famous Disney touch for quality, service and hospitality.

As part of the Disneyland Resort, these hotels are just steps away from the eclectic mix of dining, entertainment and recreational features of the Downtown Disney District.  Of course, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Parks are just a short walk away from any of the on-property hotels.

Disneyland Hotel

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the reimagined Disneyland Hotel creates a fun, family destination that pays tribute to the early days of Disneyland. 973 rooms are spread across three themed towers that feature an energy-efficient sky-blue reflective glass exterior. The Fantasy Tower lobby showcases Mary Blair artwork, creating an instant connection to “it’s a small world.” The Frontier Tower features a scale model of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in the lobby. At the Adventure Tower, guests will see Jungle Cruise characters incorporated into the design.

The AAA Four Diamond hotel is also home to a unique collection of themed suites immersing guests in a way only Disney can, including the Mickey Mouse Penthouse, Pirates of the Caribbean, Adventureland, Big Thunder and Fairy Tale suites.

Guests of all ages will enjoy an immersive water play area and courtyard. With a nod to the iconic original park signage, a replica of the original Mark 1 Monorail Car sits at the entrance of two water slides, paying tribute to nostalgic Disneyland. No tickets are required at the D-Ticket and E-ticket pools, which draw their names from the iconic ticket books that were used in the early days of Disneyland to experience attractions. The area also features a Minnie Mouse-themed outdoor spa. In addition, six cabanas are available; each features a flat screen TV, refrigerator, safe, phone, and ceiling fan.

For dining experiences, Tangaroa Terrace features Island-inspired fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are prepared to order and delivered to their tables either inside or on the large outdoor patio.

Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar, named after Trader Sam, Disney’s Jungle Cruise “head salesman,” features interactive special effects blended with classic Disney storytelling. Trader Sam’s serves a mix of creative appetizers and signature cocktails like the “Uh Oa!” (light and dark rums with orange, passion fruit, guava and grapefruit juices) or the “Shipwreck on the Rocks” (bourbon, lemon, mint and organic agave nectar). Live music performed on the patio in the evening adds to the fun environment.

For families or individuals preferring a high degree of service, the Disneyland Hotel features concierge-level rooms with upgraded in-room amenities and complimentary access to the exclusive concierge lounge.  Meetings are easily accommodated within the hotel’s 136,000-square-feet of function space, and a business center provides a variety of services.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

Capturing the spirit of early California through inspiring design and daring architecture, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a deluxe 948-room resort hotel property, offering a premium option for business or pleasure visits to the Disneyland Resort.

This AAA Four Diamond hotel is the first Disney resort hotel in the world to be located inside a theme park – Disney California Adventure – making stays at the deluxe hotel a uniquely themed experience.  The Grand also is home to the first Disney Vacation Club Villas on the West Coast.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa celebrates the romantic Arts & Crafts movement of early 20th century California.  Designed to capture the artistic exploration of California’s coastlines with its Monterey pines and redwood forests, the hotel is layered with the memories of the arroyo craftsmen, the mission pioneers and the Plein Air school of painters.

Among the deluxe guestrooms are standard rooms, artisan suites, two vice presidential suites and two presidential suites.  In addition, the Resort offers more than 20,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, ranging from the 12,000-square-foot Sequoia ballroom to smaller conference rooms and a sophisticated boardroom.

The deluxe hotel features 24-hour room service, its own entry gate into Disney California Adventure, and rooms that overlook both the theme park and the exciting Downtown Disney District.  For corporate meeting guests, the hotel features meeting planner offices, a business center and separate meetings and conventions check-in facilities.

Food and beverage facilities include the AAA Four Diamond restaurant Napa Rose, as well as Storytellers Cafe and Hearthstone Lounge.  Guests will enjoy two heated pools and a themed water slide, two whirlpools, a children’s pool, and a concierge level with upgraded amenities and services.

Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel

Guests return to the heyday of California beachfront boardwalks at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.  Loaded with special Disney touches, this seaside-themed hotel overlooks Paradise Pier, one of the most colorful sections of the Disney California Adventure, making its name and theme a natural fit.

This hotel offers charming facilities and superb service, with a fun California beachfront theme including recently remodeled seaside-themed rooms.  The hotel is festively painted and decorated to reflect the theme, and some guests enjoy a view of the colorful Paradise Pier district of the park right from their room, along with the “World of Color” nighttime water spectacular.

Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel takes pride in being one of the finest hotels in its class.  The 15-story, high-rise structure features 481 guest rooms, including remodeled suites and a recently renovated rooftop pool and whirlpool, a fitness center, lobby bar and coffeehouse, poolside bar, gift shops and game arcade.

In Disney’s PCH Grill, guests can take a trip along California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), for a celebration of the state’s culinary diversity and fresh spirit.  Offered daily, “Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey & Friends,” is a lively character dining experience where families can snap photos, practice hula hooping and learn how to ride a wave with Mickey Mouse and other favorite Disney characters. Disney’s PCH Grill also offers the Beach Side Bonfire Dinner Buffet, where guests can enjoy a taste of the picnics, barbecues and bonfires that often happen along the Pacific Coast Highway beaches.

‘D’s Throwback Disney: Progress Comes Full Circle’ – Part 2 – by David Caamano

Walt’s four new and exciting attractions from the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair were a smash hit. All four attractions were considered part of the top exhibits at the fair. As a result, after the fair came to end, he moved all four attractions to Disneyland in California. Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln found a new home on Main Street; ‘it’s a small world’ received a new show building facade designed by Rolly Crump. Although Ford’s Magic Skyway didn’t move intact, the dinosaurs found a new home along the Disneyland Railroad and General Electric renewed their sponsorship of The Carousel of Progress. The show would find a new home as the centerpiece attraction for the New Tomorrowland expansion of 1967. Unfortunately, Walt died seven months before the new land opened, but he would have been proud. The new slogan for Tomorrowland became ‘A World on the Move’. The expansion included the openings of Adventure Thru Inner Space, the WEDway People Mover, Rocket Jets and of course Carousel of Progress. This concept of the future constantly in motion, progressing forward was truly apparent around the lagoon area by Submarine Voyage. There was a great combination of kinetic energy in this area; the Monorail zigzagged the PeopleMover above both the cars of Autopia and the submarines in the lagoon. Above all these modes of transportation, you also had the Skyway flying above. But The Carousel of Progress show was truly the heart and soul of all this progress.

Disneyland Version Concept Art

The show moved relatively intact. The show received a new show building that did not include a dome similar to the fair. However there were still two levels, with a post show on the second level. Guests would enter the show from the ground level and once again during Act VI there was a speed ramp up to the second level. The first minor changed was in the set for the final scene with the family in the present/future. In this version, mother and father are seated in the living room enjoying a quiet Christmas. Mother constantly interrupts Father excited to show her latest in kitchen appliances and their entertainment center. They talk about the new and exciting community they live in, and in the window guests could see a familiar model city of the future.

Sketch for 1975 WDW version final scene

The major difference to the Carousel of Progress at Disneyland was that it incorporated Walt’s final dream for the E.P.C.O.T. that never was. Out the window of mother and father’s living room was a mural of the futuristic city. In the final act guests would then ascend to the second level of the building where they could see the complete model for the community of tomorrow that is now famous from Walt’s Florida Project television show. But by 1973, G.E. wanted a change of scenery and it was time to move on.

WDW CoP Construction

Once the Magic Kingdom and Walt Disney World opened to major success in Florida, G.E. wanted to move their presence to the newest piece of Disney real estate. The company insisted on moving the show to Tomorrowland in Florida and renewed their sponsorship. But this renewal came with demands. Executives from G.E. realized that they didn’t want guests to wait until ‘a great big beautiful tomorrow’ to purchase the latest G.E. products. They wanted guests to buy products now; the future was now. So one of the first demands was to rewrite the beloved theme song. The Sherman Brothers were once again called upon to work their magic. Although they did produce a new catchy song, ‘Now is the Best Time of Your Life’, they’ve always admitted that it didn’t have the same spirit of Walt as their original song. The good thing was that the new Florida guests had no clue that this was a new song.
