Disneyland Resort Restaurants Win 12 Awards at Southern California Restaurant Writers Banquet

Disneyland Resort celebrates a dozen new awards from the Southern California Restaurant Writers, with tributes for 2013-2014 going to restaurants at Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park and the Disneyland Resort hotels.

Each year, the Southern California Restaurant Writers evaluates restaurants from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border on food, service, ambiance and beverages. Three Disneyland Resort restaurants received highest honors, earning the coveted Five Star award and the Golden Bacchus Wine Award: Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge in Disney California Adventure Park, Napa Rose in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Steakhouse 55 in the Disneyland Hotel.

These, plus several other prestigious awards, were presented to the Disneyland Resort staff at the 2013-2014 Southern California Restaurant Writers Annual Awards Banquet held on April 13 at the Astor Classic Events Center in Anaheim, Calif. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Jose Barragan, named “Manager of the Year” for his work at Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge.

Barragan has been with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for 17 years. He brings 35 years of food service experience, plus a business administration education, to Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge. Prior to his Disney career, he spent 11 years at the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and four years at the Ritz-Carlton.

“Jose’s years of managing fine dining, as well as his passion and expertise for creating amazing dining experiences, have enabled us to create a signature restaurant that no one would expect to find inside a theme park,” said Michele Gendreau, general manager of Food & Beverage at Disney California Adventure Park.

Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge harkens back to the Golden Age of Hollywood at the heart of Disney California Adventure Park. The seasonal menu, created by award-winning Executive Chef Andrew Sutton, celebrates California’s diverse cuisine. Guests enjoy varieties of sustainable fish, both wild and farmed, in dishes such as ceviche of blue cobia and sesame-soy-glazed Skuna Bay salmon. The lunch menu includes seasonal salads, such as Strawberry Chicken, an Angus burger with cheddar cheese and house-made pickles. A friendly wine program includes both Old and New World wines, with a focus on California vintages.

Napa Rose, at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, also earned Five Stars and the Golden Bacchus Wine Award this year. Napa Rose showcases California wine country cuisine, changing its menu seasonally to source the finest, freshest ingredients. The cuisine is created to complement the restaurant’s extensive California-dominated wine collection. The 17,000-bottle cellar carries more than 1,000 different labels, with 80 wines available by the glass.

“Executive Chef Andrew Sutton and Napa Rose General Manager Philippe Tosques have been instrumental in Napa Rose’s success, contributing to the dining experience with their expertise, dedication, talent and integrity,” said Dan Coleman, general manager of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Event Operations. “These awards are a tribute to their hard work and dedication to the Napa Rose.”

With 12 awards going to eight restaurants – two in Disneyland Park, two in Disney California Adventure Park and three in Disneyland Resort hotels – Disneyland Resort guests have outstanding dining options and locations to choose from on their visits.

Harley-Davidson, Marvel Join Forces in National Search for Real-Life Fan to Star in New Digital Franchise

Harley-Davidson and Marvel Entertainment, LLC, have teamed up once again to defend freedom and tame explosive city streets in – and beyond – the popular film franchise, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Since the early days of Captain America, he has been associated with Harley-Davidson, and the latest chapter of the film saga is no different as the Super Hero now revs up a brand new Harley-Davidson Street 750.

Harley Davidson Motor Company Marvel

To unite fans of both brands, Harley-Davidson is seeking candidates to join Captain America as “Agent 1” and star in a brand-new digital franchise, which will introduce a new chapter of action, including a group of characters created by Marvel’s Custom Division exclusively for Harley, and feature the new Harley-Davidson Street 750. The mini-movie and digital comic will debut in Marvel and Harley-Davidson online and social channels this summer.

“Our collaboration with Marvel puts fans directly into the center of the action like never before,” said Dino Bernacchi, Harley-Davidson U.S. Director of Marketing. “Starring as the hero in this new chapter with Marvel is not only the new Street 750 – but a real-life fan as well. The Street’s features are right in line with the authenticity, toughness, action and individualism for which Captain America is known and revered by fans around the world, and sourcing our new hero directly from that pool is equally as real and authentic.”

Where’s Your Happy Place……by Kim Lawton

I have been asked many questions about my travels to Walt Disney World.  They range from “got any tips” to “you are really going again”.  I always say I have lots of tips and we go back because there is so much to do and see there!  We haven’t seen and done it all yet!  Those replies really do not seem to answer the question in a sufficient manner.  I am not sure it is totally possible to answer it to my satisfaction let alone explain the draw Walt Disney World has for me and my husband.  Writing for WDW Daily News lets me try and put that answer into words every two weeks.

This attraction for all things Disney as well as the desire to live in Florida has led me and my husband to begin an incredible journey over the next few months.  We are retiring and relocating to central Florida.  This journey will require patience and hard work but should help us mark something off our bucket list.  Our entire reason for relocating isn’t just our love of Disney, that’s just one part.  We are escaping the cold of winter too.  Not just this last one, although it has been miserable, but all the winters ahead with the cold, ice and snow.

We have found our dream house and can be at Disney in about 30 minutes. Sometimes we can hear fireworks from the Parks!  Central Florida has so much more to see as well.  The stars at night are amazingly bright when we sit by our pool in the lanai!  We have lots of questions too.  We wonder how many alligators we will see in the neighborhood and if it will be safe to get a dog.  How will we adjust to being away from family?   Will we get tired of Disney?  What other things are there to see and do in Florida?  Mostly it is an exciting time for us.

I am excited to share this experience with the readers of our newsletter.  I hope to share some of our experiences and plan on getting as much information as possible to share about all the events and happenings at Walt Disney World.  Hopefully I will get better at using those Magic Bands with practice!!!

I am looking forward to having more Disney magic to share as we become Disney neighbors.

Photo – ‘Maleficent’s’ Elle Fanning at Disneyland

This weekend, Elle Fanning stopped by Disneyland for the Disney Social Media Moms Conference to share some footage from MALEFICENT. Since she plays the iconic character of Aurora, she took photos in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

elle-fanning-maleficent-disneyland“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

“Maleficent” is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Michael Vieira, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay. “Maleficent” opens in U.S. theaters on May 30, 2014.
