Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse by David Dunkle

“The world is full of nice, ordinary little people who live in nice, ordinary little houses on the ground. But didn’t you ever dream of a house up on a tree top?”-William Robinson

There’s a new contest going on to win a private party in the Haunted Mansion and a night’s stay in the royal suite of Cinderella’s Castle. Imagine how much fun that would be! I think the party would be really cool, as the Haunted Mansion is one of my all-time favorite “must dos” when visiting. I know the spiel, the music, the words of Madame Leota…The overnight in the castle, although certainly a Disney fanatic’s dream come true, would not be my first location choice to stay inside the park.

Aside from a peek out the windows at night, after the park has closed you are pretty much confined to the suite itself. If you require anything, there is a concierge posted outside your door to assist you. No all-night exploring the park on your own or raiding the kitchen at Cinderella’s Royal Table-bummer! I do think you can get pizza delivered, however.

Don’t get me wrong, if I would ever win the stay, I would certainly not turn it down- just for the bragging rights alone, but there is another place in the park that I’d much rather have a chance to hang up my mouse ears for a night.

I’m talking about the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House! This often overlooked and passed by attraction is original to opening day of the Magic Kingdom in 1971. According to Disney-Wiki it stands roughly 60 feet tall and 90 feet wide and is constructed of steel, concrete and stucco. There are 116 steps, 9 limbs, 1,400 branches and 300,000 polyethylene leaves. Looks real enough to me!

Like many visitors, I have my certain habits when in the Magic Kingdom. Some have to visit the Partners statue for a photo, some head right to the Astro Orbiter or Walt Disney Railroad. I head over to Adventure Land to enjoy a Dole Whip and then venture up the stairs of the tree house. The views from high up are amazing and you’re far from the crowds of pedestrians below. Music plays from the family’s organ, repeating the Swiss Polka in the upper family dining room. Many times I’ve been the only one up there and could take my time to take photos and just relax. (Catch the fireworks from up here…AMAZING although slightly obscured from view.)
I grew up with tree houses and camping out in the woods so this is of particular interest to me. I imagine myself stretched out in a hammock or on the bed as the park guests leave and the night crew comes in to do the nightly cleaning and maintenance. It would be even better if there was a light rain and cool breeze… No cell phone, no internet…just the sounds of the night creatures above and the cast members below. Give me a good book and I’d be in heaven!

Younger guests today are probably not too familiar with the Robinson family’s story. I admit I had to refresh my memory with a reading of the book by Johann David Wyss and viewing of the 1960’s Disney classic movie, which by the way gave me an even greater appreciation to the details of this awesome attraction. Hopefully the same can be an inspiration for future guests.

There were rumors at one time going around that the imagineers were thinking of giving the old tree an overhaul and tying in a new theme to Tarzan. As much as I liked Tarzan, he’s fine swinging overhead in the Great Movie Ride. This is a great representation of the classic novel and movie. I’m all for the education and bringing to light the history of this story rather than replacing it with an animated feature tie in. [Think Maelstrom/Frozen] But that’s just me, nostalgic and appreciative of what is there.

If they wanted to do something along the lines of Tarzan or Jungle Book…how cool would it be to have a series of tree houses to stay in overlooking the Kilimanjaro safari trail? Or even better, a complete tree top habitat on the original Discovery Island with rustic amenities and shipwrecked theme? Now that would be dream to come true! In the meantime, check out the SFR tree house, it is well worth the climb!

What Star Wars 7 Gave Every Member Of The Cast And Crew After Filming

Last day on the job it’s usually customary for an employee to receive a parting gift. A 22k-gold plated carriage clock. A pair of cufflinks for a button-less shirt you don’t own. Or some kind of frosted monstrosity baked by Liz in HR. In the case of the Star Wars: Episode VII crew however, what kind of parting souvenir could they have gifted on their final day of filming?

Smithsonian Exhibition Exploring the Power of Star Wars Costumes Begins National Tour January 2015

ConceptArt-QueenAmidala-SenateGownIconic costumes from “a galaxy far, far away” are presented in the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. The exhibition will begin a 12-city national tour at EMP Museum in Seattle where it will be on view Jan. 31 through Oct. 4, 2015.

Culled from the collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars and the Power of Costume is a partnership of the museum, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Lucasfilm. George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala and a bikini worn by Princess Leia when enslaved by Jabba the Hutt.

“Craftsmanship and artistry in costume design are valued creative components in the Star Wars saga,” said Lucas. “The detailed precision of a design can be as bold a measure of storytelling as words on a page, leading to truths at the core of a character, situation or shared history. From initial concept drawings to complex physical constructions, the costumes featured in this exhibition serve to further define crucial aspects of worlds created to move, educate and entertain us—to inspire the imagination.”

Presenting 60 of the finest hand-crafted costumes from the first six blockbuster Star Wars films, the exhibition uncovers the challenges, the intricate processes and the remarkable artistry of Lucas, the concept artists and costume designers. The costumes reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the story. Through nine presentational “chapters”—Introduction: Dressing a Galaxy; Jedi versus Sith: Form, Function and Design; Concept and Design for Royalty and Beyond; Symbolism and Military Power; Outlaws and Outsiders; All Corners of the Galaxy: The Galactic Senate; After the Throne: Padmé’s Journey; Darth Vader: Iconic Villain; and Droid™ Design: C-3PO and R2-D2—visitors will explore the creative process from Lucas’s vision through concept drawings by artists such as Ralph McQuarrie and Iain McCaig, to the final costume designs of John Mollo and Trisha Biggar, among others.

PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE Blu-Ray and DVD Review

With the holidays just around the corner, it is the perfect time to pick up a copy of Disney’s PLANES: FIRE AND RESCUE, now available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD.  Disney Movies Anywhere is also available so you can watch PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE anywhere you go with the app. This sequel to the 2013 film Planes finds air racer Dusty in the world of aerial firefighters.  He has to join up with some veteran firefighters to battle fires in Piston Peak National Park.  Is Dusty up to the challenge of this dangerous task?  The characters are voiced fabulously by Dane Cook, Stacey Keach, Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, Brad Garrett, Cedric the Entertainer, and Hal Holbrook just to name a few.  Once again Disney has created a way the whole family can spend time together as they watch Dusty and the whole gang in this high-flying adventure.  You will also love the Blu-Ray bonus features.  Vitaminamulch:Air Spectacular is an exclusive short that is a hilarious chain of events.  Welcome to Piston Peak is a vintage style travel advertisement for the area. Does anyone else think the Fusellodge hotel looks remarkably like Disney’s Grand Californian resort at Disneyland?  I also liked when the narrator of the ad says to watch out for deer and there is a field of John Deere-style tractors grazing.  Such a little detail makes a great joke.  Finally, the coolest bonus in my opinion is Air Attack: Firefighters from the Sky.  The director and producer take us behind-the-scenes to CAL-Fire, a real air attack base.  They visited the location for their research, and we can how the animators took the real film footage and turned it into animation for PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE. There is even an interview with an actual Smoke Jumper firefighter.  They really put their lives on the line when they go to work.  If you love the world of CARS and the first PLANES film, then you must add PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE to your movie collection.  You won’t be disappointed.
